Females 'risking their women's car insurance with arguments'

A study conducted by insurer Direct Line found that three-quarters of couples have heated discussions when driving, with 71 per cent of these respondents saying that most of the journey would be spent with the passenger criticising the driving ability of the one behind the wheel.Of all the respondents questioned, 60 per cent of couples said that arguing in the car distracted them from the road, with 19 per cent losing concentration.Female drivers may be jeopardising their women's car insurance premiums by getting wound up by their partner, with 44 per cent of women stating that arguments were sparked when they became offended by criticism of their driving.

CIS launches flexible home insurance ‘to suit you’

A new home insurance product launched by CIS will allow homeowners to have far greater flexibility and control when it comes to re-insuring their home.

Customers switching to the new policy will be able to mix and match several different types of insurance cover buildings, contents and personal possessions, travel and caravan yet keep the ease of paying only one premium, with only one piece of documentation and one renewal date. Customers can also make individual payments should they prefer to manage their finances in this way.

In addition to this, CIS offer customers a 7.5 per cent discount when taking out buildings and contents insurance together at the beginning of the policy, as well as free Legal Expenses cover for up to 50,000.

Pension funds seek a direct line to the private equity bonanza

Pension funds more than doubled direct investments in private equity deals last year as they struggled to generate the profits needed to support an ageing workforce in the face of declining public equity returns.

Associated British Ports, Thames Water and AWG were among the $24.6 billion ( 12.8 billion) of companies bought worldwide last year in private equity deals that involved pension funds. The funds included the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and Borealis, in Canada; ABP Heerlen and PGGM Zeist, of the Netherlands; and Colonial First State Asset Management, of Australia.

Their investment marked a significant jump from 2005, when pension funds invested in $10 billion of private equity deals worldwide. It is nearly four times the $6.

Esure vows to fight on despite court ruling

Esure's two-year row with Direct Line over the trademarking of a computer mouse on wheels looks set to rumble on after Esure vowed to fight a ruling that came down in favour of its rival.

The Trade Mark Registry last month backed Direct Line's objection to Esure's trademark application for the mouse on wheels, but now Esure says it will appeal.

Direct Line claimed Esure's application infringed its red telephone on wheels trademark but an Esure spokesman says: "We believe that telephones and mice are suitably different to allow our trademark to be registered."

The mouse on wheels was first used in a TV ad for Esure in 2004. The character is not currently in use but did feature in direct response TV ads during the trademark case.

Car insurance premiums soar

Other insurers including Royal Bank of Scotland, which owns Direct Line and Churchill, have since followed suit and raised their prices.

The AA said that home insurance premiums remain good value for money and are only marginally higher than in 1994.

Mr Sinclair said that some insurers were increasing premiums, to take account of more extreme weather conditions affecting properties, such as flooding and winds.

He added: "Insurers are taking note but it will take several such events to have a significant upward influence on premiums. However, I do believe that this year will start to see an upward trend."

FSA warning on insurance ads

More than half of motor insurance advertisements and a quarter of claims about home insurance were a cause for concern, according to the FSA. Travel insurance claims were generally of a higher standard.
Vernon Everitt, retail themes director at the FSA, said: “Most people rely on some form of insurance to protect them and advertising is a major influence on what they choose to buy. So it must be clear, fair and not misleading, leaving people with a balanced picture of what is on offer.”
The regulator announced it will repeat its review in three months.

Flying tiles and wheelie bins take their toll

Gerry Barrett, head of AA Home Insurance, advises: “Insurance companies are being inundated with calls. But it’s important not to delay getting relatively minor damage repaired or made safe as a further gale of less severity than we’ve seen could result in existing damage made much worse – and a much larger insurance claim. “Insurers are taking a practical view given the huge number of claims now being made. Most insurers will agree to customers getting minor damage repaired as quickly as possible and sort out the claim later – but check with your insurer first.” 24 hours after the gales, AA Insurance had received as many calls in 24 hours as in a normal week to its Claimline home insurance emergency helpline.

Storm death toll hits 13 as insurers count cost

CIS is offering customers increased flexibility with a new home insurance product that allows them to set their level of cover to suit their individual needs. Car-row couples 'are risking lives'

As many as 74 per cent of couples admit to having rows while driving, a survey from Direct Line Car insurance found.

The report, which has been monitoring home insurance prices since 1994, places the average buildings insurance quote as £209 - an increase of 1.26 per cent in the last quarter. Mean contents insurance currently stands at under £148 on average, a fall of 0.5 per cent over the period.A spokesman for home insurance provider AA cites competitive activity as a prime factor in the drop in prices, but claims customers should thoroughly check what their home insurance policies cover."As more people will inevitably be shopping around, they need to make sure they're aware of what insurers are offering for their money. Making a claim is the wrong time to find that cover doesn't meet expectation," said Kevin Sinclair.
